It was a star-studded, Seth MacFarlane-filled evening at last night’s 85th Annual Academy Awards.
As always, there were a few surprise winners. Christoph Waltz shocked the audience by winning his second Oscar for Best Supporting Actor as Dr. King Schultz in Django Unchained, besting favored nominees Robert DeNiro in Silver Linings Playbook and Tommy Lee Jones in Lincoln. 22-year old Jennifer Lawrence was so overwhelmed to receive her first Oscar that she tripped coming up to the podium to accept her award for Best Leading Actress for playing a troubled widow in Silver Linings Playbook. In a stacked field, Ang Lee took home Oscar gold for his direction in the iconic The Life of Pi.
This year’s awards also included some amazing musical performances. Similar to the 007 Collection currently available on the Video Unlimited service, the Academy Awards took time to honor 50 years of James Bond including a special tribute and montage of some of the best Bond moments in history. Singer Shirley Bassey performed her iconic theme song for Goldfinger and Adele performed the newest Bond anthem “Skyfall” later in the evening.
Inspired by the recent musical sensation Les Misérables, last night’s Academy Awards paid tribute to hit musical films. Catherine Zeta Jones performed “All that Jazz” from the Oscar winning film Chicago, one of a few shout-outs this decade-old film received, followed by Jennifer Hudson’s performance of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” from Dreamgirls. The segment closed with the entire cast of Les Misérables, including Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe, performing the song “One Day More,” one of the most moving numbers from the film.
In the end, the prize of the night – Best Picture – went to Argo, the story of a CIA mission to rescue diplomats in Iran. The award was accepted by Producers Grant Heslov, George Clooney, and a tearful Ben Affleck who last received an Academy Award as the writer and creator of the movie, Good Will Hunting.
